On June 6-7, the United States (US) Association of Chinese Political Studies (ACPS), in conjunction with School of International Studies at the Peking University (Beijing, China), held an international conference entitled “China and the changing world order: domestic and international dimensions” on the campus of Peking University. The conference received financial support from the Peking University Center for China and Global Governance Studies, Peking University Center for International Security and Peace Studies, Peking University Editorial Board of the Journal of International Studies, the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations (U.S.).
This timely and stimulating conference attracted 75 participants from 17 countries and regions, including U.S., Russia, Germany, Singapore, Pakistan, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Canada, South Korea, United Kingdom, Israel, Japan, mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. Presentations were given by academics, doctoral candidates, and researchers associated with international organizations, research centers, and universities. The meeting’s 16 panels covered a wide range of issues related to Chinese political studies. Foreign policy oriented papers covered a variety topics as National Security and Territorial Contention; China and its Neighbors; The Politico-Economy of China-Latin America Investment Relations; China in Global Environmental Governance; A Constructivist Approach to Great Power Politics; China in International Political Economy; China-US relations; China’s Economic Diplomacy in the World; China Rising: Threat or Opportunity for the Rest? Domestic politics oriented presentations tackled issues such as Social Changes and Regime Stability in China; Trade and Investment; Nationalism, Ethnic Governance and Social Unrest; Political discourse and content analysis on China studies; Local Governance in China; Media, History Education and Politics; Domestic Economic Reform: Reaching the Bottleneck?.
The opening ceremony on June 6 was facilitated by Peking University School of International Studies Vice Dean WANG Yizhou. Opening remarks for the conference were given by ACPS President Wei Liang (梁微) and Peking University School of International Studies Dean JIA Qingguo. For the keynote speech given at the opening ceremony on June 6, President WANG Jisi of the Peking University Institute of International and Strategic Studies spoke on “One World, One Dream:China and International Order.” For the keynote speech given at the conference banquet on June 7, General CHEN Zhou (陈舟), from Academy of Military Science of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army on China’s new defense policy. At the ACPS annual meeting business meeting, the board voted unanimously to present JCPS editor-in-chief Dr. GUO Sujian a Special Achievement Award and to recognize the significant contribution made by him to improve and promote the JCPS in the past several years.
At the conference closing on Sunday, June 7, Dr. Liang expressed her appreciation to the faculty, staff and student volunteers of the School of International Studies, Peking University for their support and thanked Dr. Jean-Marc Blanchard, the executive director of the Mr. & Mrs. S.H. Wong Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations for his continuous support to ACPS.
