CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
The National Committee on United States-China Relations is pleased to announce the sixth round of its Public Intellectuals Program (PIP). This two-year program, generously funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York, is designed to identify outstanding members of the next generation of American China scholars, enrich their understanding of policymaking processes in both the United States and China, help them establish useful relationships both with their academic colleagues and with policy practitioners, and nurture their ability to engage with the public at a national, regional, and local level. PIP is implemented through a series of activities, including seminars in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, a study tour of China, the opportunity to participate in National Committee delegations as scholar escorts, and public education initiatives.
We are looking for China specialists – in the academic, professional, or policymaking spheres – who have the interest and potential to play significant roles as public intellectuals. Twenty young American China scholars who, in the tradition of earlier China hands, wish to venture outside of academia or their profession into areas relevant to foreign policy and public education, will be selected for the program.
PIP is an enrichment opportunity intended to complement Fellows’ primary academic or professional positions; stipends are not provided, but all program-related expenses are covered. The program offers unique opportunities for professional development, mentoring by senior scholars, networking, and exposure. Fellows will gain access to senior policymakers and experts in both the United States and China, and to individuals and fields they would not typically be exposed to, such as the business, arts, health, and civil society sectors in China, as well as to the media in both countries. Fellows will also have access to media coaches to help edit and place op-eds and develop a social media presence. Further, successful applicants will become part of an accomplished community of PIP Fellows who have formed a strong network of mutual support and academic collaboration.
Eligibility: Ph.D. academics in all disciplines; a limited number of slots are available for established professionals and policymakers. Must have demonstrated expertise on China, several years of experience teaching or in a professional field, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Preference given to candidates between 30 to 45 years old, and to those living in the United States or Greater China.
Timeframe: Two years, from March 2019 through December 2020.
Commitments: During the program period, Fellows will be expected to commit to the following:
- Attend two four- or five-day Washington, D.C.-based workshops (May/June 2019 and November 2020);
- Attend one two-and-a-half-day San Francisco-based workshop (spring 2020);
- Participate in one twelve to fourteen day Fellows’ trip to China (summer 2019 or summer 2020);
- Develop at least one local public education program with up to $1,250 funding from PIP; and
- Potentially serve as a scholar-escort for an NCUSCR delegation (one to two weeks in China or the United States).
Applicants must complete an online application, which includes an essay of no more than 800 words focused on how you would benefit from the PIP program and how the program would benefit from your participation, two short supplementary questions, a current CV, and the names and contact information of three references (two professional and one personal). Semi-finalists will be contacted mid-February to arrange telephone interviews at a mutually convenient time. Notification will be before March 4.
