Fudan Institute for Advanced Study in Social Sciences (Fudan-IAS) at Fudan University is to call for papers for an international conference on legitimacy and governance to be held at Fudan University in Shanghai, China between July 3-4, 2010 (Saturday-Sunday), with check-in on Friday, July 2 and check-out on Monday, July 5. This conference will be co-sponsored by the Association of Chinese Political Studies (ACPS), Fudan University School of International and Public Affairs, Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and China Social Science Quarterly.
The conference theme
The theme of the conference is centered around “Legitimacy and Governance,” aims to bring together a broad cross-discipline of social science scholars to discuss the following related topics (not to exclude other related topics):
1. General theories of legitimacy and critical reflections on theoretical development of legitimacy
2. Cultural origins, intellectual development, and value judgments of the Western and Chinese theories of legitimacy
3. Comparative studies of legitimacy theories and practices in China and the West
4. General theories of governance and critical reflections on theoretical development of governance
5. Comparative studies of governance theories and practices in China and the West
6. Relations between values and practices with regards to legitimacy, governance, development, efficiency, justice, equality, freedom and order
7. Theoretical reflections on the political legitimacy and effective governance
8. The state of research on legitimacy and governance in Chinese local and grassroots organizations
9. Civil society and governance
10. The influence of globalization on the theories and practices of legitimacy and governance
11. Green revolution, global governance, and new world order
12. Global warming and environmental governance
13. International relations theories and global governance
14. Soft power and legitimacy
15. Soft power and good governance
Deadline for paper proposals: February 1, 2010
All overseas scholars and researchers who are working in related fields are invited to submit proposals for consideration. Please send your proposal no later than February 1, 2010 to Dr. Sujian Guo at sguo@sfsu.edu and please put “2010 Fudan-IAS conference paper proposal” in the subject line of your email. Paper proposals should include paper title, name(s) of author(s), institutional affiliation, title/position, mailing address, phone number, fax number, e-mail address, and an abstract of 250-300 words. All requisite information should be contained in a Word document (please do not use PDF) attached to your email. After the paper proposal review is completed by a conference organizing committee, the acceptance/rejection notifications will be sent to you no later than February 30, 2010. Conference Accommodations and Deadline for full paper submission: May 15, 2010
Fudan Institute for Advanced Study in Social Sciences will provide room and board accommodations for three nights and two days for paper presenters. Additional details regarding lodging and conference venues will be provided at a later date. Participants whose paper proposals are accepted need to submit the full paper no later than May 15, 2009.
Conference papers will be published by the organizers in both English and Chinese. Well researched conference papers will have the opportunity (1) to be published in China Social Science Quarterly, Fudan Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences (in English), or Journal of Chinese Political Science (JCPS); (2) and/or to be published in edited books flowing from the conference.
