The 11th China Communication Conference
“New Media, Diverse Cultures and Global Communication:
Challenge, Engage and Change”
July 9-11, 2010, Peking University, Beijing, Chin
In the first decade of the 21st century, the world has been facing unprecedented political, economic, social, cultural and environmental challenges. The rapidly developing information and communication technologies have played a significant role in dealing with those challenges. In the era of globalized communication, it is communication scholars’ responsibility to promote a wider and deeper dialogue and understanding among diverse cultures and contribute to global peace and sustainable development.
For this purpose, the 11th China Communication Conference, co-organized by the Communication Association of China (CAC) and Peking University’s School of Journalism and Communication, will be held in Beijing from July 9 to 11, 2010. The theme of the conference is “New Media, Diverse Cultures and Global Communication: Challenge, Engage and Change”, aiming to broaden the horizon of communication research and build an open intellectual forum where both local and global issues can be discussed.
The organizing committee is now calling for papers for the conference. All original papers from scholars, practitioners, master and PhD students, both in Chinese and English, are welcomed. The detailed information about this conference is as follows.

6. Main topics:
(1). New Media and Social Development
This topic of discussion mainly focuses on the social impact of new media represented by the internet, the forms and diffusion of new media, netizen and internet consumption, internet and civil society, new media and life (BBS forums, social networking websites and their expansion), the innovation in online communication theory, the political economy of new media, as well as other hotspot research subjects about new media.
(2). Intercultural Communication Theory and its Application
With more and more people being involved in intercultural activities nowadays, communication scholars are duty bound to indigenize intercultural communication research and apply intercultural communication theories among different countries, cultures and ethnicities in order to foster respect for cultural diversity, understanding, tolerance, dialogue and cooperation in the global village. This topic of discussion mainly covers the following sub-topics:
(A). Intercultural communication and values among diverse cultures
(B). The influence of different thinking patterns on intercultural communication
(C). The application of intercultural communication theories in the context of
international news reporting
(D). Intercultural communication and Confucius Institutes
(E). Intercultural communication between different countries and ethnic groups
(F). The universal relevance of Chinese culture in communication
(G). Cultural diversity, citizenship and social community from the perspective of
communication
(H). How to enhance the attraction of Chinese culture overseas
(3). International Communication Studies in the Context of Contemporary China
As a branch of communication studies, International Communication was born in the U.S.. But as the other countries, especially the developing countries came to realize the importance of international communication, and with the extension of communication studies in the global academic circle, more ideas and theories have been introduced into this area and made it to be a multi-cultural field in social sciences.
In today’s China, external communication or international communication is still in an exploratory stage, which is far behind the Western level in terms of theories, skills, techniques and professional operations. We need more serious thinking, comparisons and analyses to find answers to questions like how to improve our communication capability by strengthening hardware construction, such as the construction of media organization and the professionalization of media practitioners, how to renew our mentality and discard outdated discourse and uniform narrative pattern, how to construct a theoretical system of international communication with Chinese characteristics, etc..
(4). Communication Ethics and Media’s Social Responsibility
In the digital/internet age, communication ethics—the codes of ethics, moral standards and values followed by media organizations and in human communication activities, are more significant than ever before for the creation of good information environment, the harmonious development of the society and the reconstruction of social values. Therefore, we need to explore how media can be socially responsible and provide true, accurate, comprehensive and objective information, as well as how media can dissolve the conflict between communication freedom and public interest and consequently increase their own public credibility and social impact. This topic of discussion mainly deals with the following:
(A). Globalization, communication freedom and media’s social responsibility
(B). Conflict and dilemma between public interests and media ethics
(C). Social order, post-modern ethics and mass communication
(D). Social justice, media fairness and public credibility of media
(E). Quality of communication content, principles and standards of media ethics
(F). Internet ethics and new problems of cyber culture
(G). Visual communication and media ethics
(H). Audience ethics
(5). New Perspective of Communication Research Methodology and its Application
Research methodology is the key to the quality of communication research. In light of the challenges posed by new media to the traditional communication research methodology, this topic of discussion intends to focus on the following three aspects:
(A).New methods, technologies and perspectives of both quantitative and
qualitative research
(B). Methodical and applied research on media and communication
(C).The research methods of other social sciences and their implications on communication studies
(D). The methods and theories of interdisciplinary studies on communication
(6). Traditional Media Innovation and Social Development
The internet has posed great challenge to the traditional media, changing the information transmission channels and the business models that traditional media, especially print media has used for a century. This topic focuses on the strategy and techniques adopted by the traditional media to meet the challenge. The subtopics include:
(A). Media convergence and the theoretical and practical research on “All Media”
(B). Path options in the process of media reform
(C). Research on creative industries in media and communication field
(D). The research on demand and education system of the creative talents in All Media from the international perspective
(7). Studies on Rhetorical Communication
This topic focuses on the pioneering theory of rhetoric studies and their applications. The subtopics it covers are as follows:
(A). Studies on the new interdisciplinary theory of rhetorical communication
(B). Nation-state rhetorical studies, such as the rhetorical capability and communication strategy of China’s international image building
(C). Studies on rhetoric of journalism, mainly on narrative structure and method of both lingual and video news texts
(D). Studies on rhetoric of advertising, mainly on the rhetorical structure and method of both lingual and video advertising texts
(E). Studies on Internet rhetoric, mainly on the strategy of rhetorical communication in adjusting and controlling Internet opinions about public emergences
(F). Studies on speech communication, mainly on the theory and practice of speech communication
(8). Science Communication
Science Communication is a new topic in the field of communication, though the spread of science and technology has been an old topic in human history. As an interdisciplinary area, science communication needs to integrate the knowledge of other fields, especially social sciences, humanities, art, science and medicine. Thus we hope that experts and scholars in different fields of study can all participate in this research and panel discussion. The submitted theses can be about the following topics, but not limited to them. Different theories and methods applied to panel studies are welcomed, such as different schools of theory, and qualitative and quantitative methods, especially content analysis and case studies.
(A). Theory and research method of science communication: history, present and future
(B). New media and science communication industry: mechanism and model
(C). Science communication and public health, environmental and climatic change, risk society
(D). Science communication and popular culture, communication of video and audio
(E). Science communication and scientific talents: scientific community at home and abroad
(F). Public comprehension and literacy of science
(G). Science communication in China: problems and countermeasures
(9). Performance and Outlook: Media Industry in China and the World
With information technology developing fast and the change of competition environment, media industry has been being in the process of innovation and profound transition in China and the world. Through crossing of regional boundary or industrial boundary, digital media has transformed the way of traditional business conducting model and become new resource of social wealth. With the advent of “expression by the whole people” age and facing of the change of role and responsibility, media industry is being confronted a lot of new challenge for competition strategies and exploring the ways for further development. This topic for discussion include following issues and focus:
(A). Transition and innovation of media industry
(B). Competition strategy and structure of global communication
(C). Digital technology and developmental model of media industry
(D). Media convergence and media organization: marketing and management
(E). Social impact of media and system of communication industry
(F). Research on the communication capacity of the broadcasting media in China
(G).The organization of sports communication and management of sports media industry.
(10). Development, Innovation and Transformation of Modern Advertising Industry
Faced with challenges posed by the internet and globalization, modern advertising industry is entering a brand new stage of development. The following are some issues that need to be explored:
(A). Globalization and the advertising industry development
(B). New media’s influence on the advertising industry
(C). Relationship between creative industries and the advertising industry
(D). The development model and future strategy of the advertising industry in
China
(11). Any Other Topics Relevant to Communication Studies
7. Academic and format requirements for paper submission
(1). The topic should be narrowed down and mainly focus on communication studies;
(2). The paper should integrate theory with application and focus on both academic and
practical significance;
(3). Citation and quotation should follow academic standard: citation should be inserted as footnote, and reference should be put at the end of the text; Papers written in English should be in APA style.
(4). The length of the paper should be within 6,000-10,000 words/characters;
(5). Please submit the electronic version (Word format) of your paper to the conference organizer;
(6). Previously published papers will not be accepted;
(7). Please provide around 500-word abstracts in both English and Chinese before the text;
(8). Author(s) should provide a 75-100 words bio and contact information after the text.
8?Deadline and ways of submission:
The organizing committee will prepare all relevant documents of the conference according to the international standards of large-scale academic conference. To avoid unnecessary technical problems the committee encourages you to submit your paper as early as possible.
Deadline: Please submit your abstract (Around 500 words in both Chinese and English) by February 28, 2010. The full article should be submitted by May 16, 2010. The author should fill out the Registration Form (See attachment).

9?The review and publication of the conference papers
The conference committee will review all submitted theses and select the papers for conference presentation and also the top student papers and faculty papers for awards or other honors. The paper selections are done in a blind review process. Selected papers will be published in the conference proceedings.
The organizing committee will arrange keynote speech, session presentations, as well as panel discussions. We welcome experts, scholars or graduate students to submit panel proposals and chair the panel. The panel chair should organize 3-5 scholars to submit papers and discuss a specific topic. The committee will review the panel proposals and select the ones that meet the conference requirements. Papers from selected panels will also be presented and compete for top paper awards. Accepted papers will be notified by June 15, 2010.
